Eggs are the result of what the chicken eats, the yolk colour is obtained by carotenes which are ingested through grass, lucerne, corn, marigold flower, capsicum etc. The more carotenes the chicken eats the richer the colour of the yolk. If you feed fish to them, the eggs will taste fishy and cabbage has the same effect.

The same goes for chemicals. Eggs can easily be contaminated by residue which can be in the feed, from antibiotics, hormones or pesticides used in treating grains.

Most feeds don't contain antibiotics or hormones as they need a vet's prescription, cost money and are not needed in backyard chook feed.

However chemical pesitcides are widely used by the grain growing industry for the control of pests in the stored grain. These chemicals are sprayed onto the grain that goes for storage. This grain then has a with-holding period, whereby it should not be used.

Here at Wagner's Poultry, at harvest time we purchase grain which has not been treated with any pesticides and in turn we don't use any chemicals ourselves.

We think it is the better alternative for our customers. Therefore, sometimes during the year you may find some weevils and beetles in our layers mash. These bugs are harmless to the chooks as chooks are NOT vegetarians! They eat the bugs in the garden. So feel confident when eating your home-grown, great tasting eggs, without any chemical residue!
